I am frequently asked about a commonly occurring skin reaction "Laser Bumps" or also known as "Follicular Edema" post-laser hair removal treatment by both my existing client and potential clients.
Follicular edema, also known as Laser bumps, is a common occurrence for some clients during or after laser hair removal treatments. It's a temporary swelling or inflammation around the hair follicles, typically caused by the heat generated during the laser targeting of the hair follicles. This reaction is part of the body's natural healing process and generally appears as mild to severe small red bumps. It can emerge during the session or immediately after treatment in the treated areas. The likelihood of experiencing these 'Laser bumps' varies among individuals due to differences in skin sensitivity and reactions. Factors such as skin type, hair color, and hair thickness play a role in influencing the severity of follicular edema.
Usually, follicular edema takes 2 to 24 hours to disappear after the treatment. With the progression of treatments, session after session, the occurrence of laser bumps tends to decrease and subsides relatively quickly.
These pre-care and post-care tips that I recommend to my clients help manage and alleviate follicular edema following a laser hair removal session.
Pre-care Tips:
1. Avoid direct sun exposure prior to the area of the treatment as it can increase sensitivity.
2. Shave the area being treated 24 hours prior to the treatment.
3. Ensure that the skin is clean and free of any moisturizers, makeup, and or deodorants to prevent potential reactions.
Post-care tips:
1. Cool compress or ice pack to the treated area to reduce swelling, redness, itching, and discomfort.
2. Well moisturized the treated area with a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer to soothe the skin.
3. Refrain from using harsh chemicals, tight clothing, or excessive heat on the treatment for 48-72 hours.
4. Protect the treated area by applying sun protection or covering the area with clothing.
